“A Latin cross is not merely a reaffirmation of Christian beliefs. It is a symbol often used to honor and respect those whose heroic acts, notable contributions and patient striving help secure an honored place in history for this nation and its people.”
I wonder how the priests and nuns who trained Kennedy feel about the cross being minimized as a religious symbol when it is prominent on the walls of every Catholic school and dominates every Christian church.
Yes, the cross is more than just a spiritual symbol– not less of one as Kennedy asserts. It is the cudgel that has massacred millions of Jews, Muslims and heretics in continual spasms of pogroms, Crusades and witch trials. It has been twisted by Nazis , burned by Klansmen, wielded by vampire-haters and defended by racists.
Every cult has its symbols, and I don’t care if Christians want to use death panels to memorialize their leader, but do not try to convince me that the cross is now a totem of American patriotism.
