D-Day + 40 + 25

Looking back through old photo albums, I realize how lucky I was to be able to visit historic and scenic places around the world as a White House correspondent, and how smart I was to take a camera.

I covered President Reagan's travels, and while things like the 40th D-Day commemoration and today's 65th are pretty standard and devoid of politics, it is still hard to believe an African-American president is representing the United States today, especially given the fact that "the Greatest Generation" and its military were segregated.

The leaders may change, but Omaha Beach and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer remain the same.
