Nothing wrong with appointing a woman to replace Hillary Clinton as senator from New York, especially one as appealing as Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (though I would have preferred Maggie Gyllenhaal).But there were two others in the running. Rep. Carolyn Maloney and, of course, Caroline Kennedy.
Which one is not like the other ones?
Well, Caroline Kennedy's father and uncle had their heads blown off by crazed gunmen. Carolyn Maloney (not to be confused with, as I recently was, New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed by a crazed gunman) is staunchly in favor of gun control, as befits any sane person who represents New York.
Kirsten Gillibrand, however, is a gun-loving misanthrope, a bought-and-paid-for spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association. She can have her two years, but if there is any justice, Malone --or someone else who loves life--will knock Gillibrand right onto her holster 2010.
