There’s a line from one of my favorite folk songs, “The Mary Ellen Carter,” that refers to “smilin’ bastards lyin’ to ya everywhere you go.”
Guess who I am talking about today, as almost every other day?
Just when you thought the Bush administration couldn’t sink lower, it turns out the domestic terrorism threat has been inflated by phony numbers. The stats that the FBI filters through the Justice Department and gives to Congress and the White House are, in almost every category and in most individual case, false. A lie.
They are the numbers meant to frighten us into giving up our civil liberties and giving up our tax dollars to fight a threat that turns out to include routine drug crimes, immigration violations and marriage fraud.
Slice it any way you want – either another bureaucratic screw-up or an intentional book-cooking – this is the most incompetent administration since Nero.
